Sanctuary To Apollo

Delphi Temple

The Temple of Apollo in Delphi was built in the 8th century BC, and there is a holy stone in the temple, marking the center of the universe. Shortly after the arrival of Apollo, his brother Dionysus also came to Delphi. Dionysus is a god of irrationality, ecstasy, and drunkenness. The Greeks thought that he could provide a balance for Apollo's calm and solemnity.

The Temple of Delphi was abandoned after the eradication of the pagan movement by the Roman emperors of Rome. Until the 17th and 18th centuries, interest in the temple gradually recovered. Archaeological excavations at the Delphi site began in the 19th century. Today at the Delphi Museum, visitors can enjoy the treasures of the ancient temple.
