Day 1: London - Winchester - Stonehenge - Exeter

Summary of The Day

Departing from London, we will travel out through the old kingdom of Wessex to its ancient capital – the historic city of Winchester.

From here, you head to a quieter but equally profound place: the standing stone circles of Stonehenge.

At the award-winning visitor centre, you can view the exhibition of hundreds of prehistoric items from the Stonehenge collection.

By joining the land train shuttle, you make your way to the world-famous stone circles.

You then travel to Exeter, an important fortified settlement in Roman times and your base for two nights.

Meeting point

9:15 am - Stance 3, Greenline Coach Terminal, Bulleid Way, Victoria, London, England, United Kingdom

Stonehenge is the Britain's most iconic archaeological site. This compelling ring of monolithic stones has been attracting a steady stream of pilgrims, poets and philosophers for the last 5000 years and is still a mystical, ethereal place – a haunting echo from Britain's forgotten past, and a reminder of those who once walked the ceremonial avenues across Salisbury Plain.

Day 2: Dartmoor - Tavistock - Exeter

Summary of The Day

Explore the remote windswept magnificence of Dartmoor, where you can see strings of the native ponies grazing close to the striking rock formations.

You cross the ancient Clapper Bridge at Postbridge before heading to Tavistock, the historic market town and birthplace of Sir Francis Drake.

Arrive back in Exeter in the early afternoon, the city walls, the Norman cathedral, the Royal Albert Memorial, and the Quayside all await you.

Dartmoor National Park

Dartmoor is Devon’s wild heart. Covering 368 sq miles, this vast national park feels like it’s tumbled straight out of a Tolkien tome, with its honey-coloured heaths, moss-smothered boulders, tinkling streams and eerie granite hills (known locally as tors).

Day 3: Exeter - Boscastle – Falmouth

Summary of The Day

Today, you explore the ancient Cornish capital of Launceston and its 12th century Norman castle.

You head west to the North Cornish coast and the Elizabethan fishing village of Boscastle.

Indulge in a cream tea, take a stroll out to the dramatic headland, or learn a spell or two in the Museum of Witchcraft.

You travel to the village of Tintagel and the ruins of its headland Castle.

After lunch, you head south to the bustling port town of Falmouth for the next two nights.

Tintagel Castle

Tintagel Castle

The spectre of legendary King Arthur looms large over Tintagel and its dramatic clifftop castle. Though the present-day ruins mostly date from the 13th century, archaeological digs have revealed the foundations of a much earlier fortress, fuelling speculation that Arthur may indeed have been born at the castle, as locals like to claim. It's a stunningly romantic sight, with its crumbling walls teetering precariously above the sheer cliffs, and well worth devoting at least half a day to exploring.

Land's End

Famous as the last port of call for charity walkers on the 874-mile slog from John O’Groats in Scotland, Land's End is a special spot – which makes the decision to build a tacky theme park here in the 1980s all the more inexplicable. Still, once you bypass the tat, the coast path which runs south from Land’s End remains as wild and beautiful as any in Cornwall.
